OBJETIVES:

RESEARCH     EDUCATION     DIVULGATION

The scientific study of cetaceans and the education of the general public, on the results, has no other aim that the Preservation of these creatures.

This is our method to reaching our final goals - to preserve cetaceans so that future generations may know and enjoy their way of living - to ensure that present and future generations be aware of the importance of the sea and its resources, and also of the need to protect them for the wellbeing of all living creatures.

The scientific study:

Among the aims in this field, is the report entitled “Preliminary study of the ecology of the Basque coast cetaceans” which supplies information about the different types of cetaceans , their abundance and their distribution on the Basque coast.

This study suggest printing a photoidentification catalogue of the animals, in order to establish a standard data base, similar to other research and conservation programmes carried out in spain and in most parts of Europe.

A Knowlege of the biological parameters, enable us to obtain more information about the state of preservation of these animals, and as a result we can decide suitable measures to protect them.

Education:

Another of our main aims is to inform the general piblic of the existence of cetaceans in the Cantabrian Sea, of their importance, and of the need to protect them and safeguard their environement.

Educational activities are directed towards all social groups, but specially towards the fishing sector, due to the importance of this group in the conservation of cetaceans and of the sea in general. In consequence, the “Euskal Balezaleak”, programme has been formed directed towards Basque fishermen, in order to establish colaboration within this group in interchanging information concerning cetaceans and other species.
The direct colaboration within this sector is vital in resching our goal.

Within the educational area, we have included a specific programme for the “Investigation Assistants” who will accompany us during our collection of data in the sea.

 Publication:

With the results of this research and of the educational programmes, we intend to carry out a publicity campaing consisting of posters and photographic exhibitios.

The publication of these results will bring us closer to our goals and, at the same time, advance the scientific study within associations with no other desire than to protect and conserve the riches of our sea.
